Anti-Racism Alliance

Welcome to Anti-Racism Alliance, a series of resources for those looking to learn more about the Black Lives Matter movement, and the importance of non-Black allyship. We welcome those of all viewpoints and backgrounds to engage with the readings, which will be posted every Friday until Election Day.

Welcome: Welcome

Welcome

We all have a narrative -- how we grew up, how we got into our careers, how we met our significant other -- a narrative that outlines our lives. We share our stories with others, and listen to theirs in return. This is how we develop connections: through a process of sharing, listening, and understanding.

Just as we have our own stories, narratives are attached to the world around us. You may have heard of the “American dream,” the possibility of going from rags-to-riches. This national narrative gives hope to those that immigrate to our country and to those that grow up impoverished.

Yet, just as these narratives can instill hope, they can also misguide us. We recognize that one subsection of the population has written the American narrative. Yet, as one of the most diverse countries in the world, we need to make sure that this history reflects various perspectives.

History is worth questioning -- especially when it concerns human life. History is being created today, as we see a re-imagined Civil Rights Movement gather momentum. As we watch from the sidelines, we see contradictory narratives being shared online. But...what is the truth? Where can I learn without being judged for my mistakes? How should I talk about these issues? Is it possible to make a difference?

If you have these questions, you’ve come to the right place. Over the next 10 weeks, we will address some of the complexities of America’s racial landscape. As we approach these tough conversations, we want to make one thing very clear: we care about your narrative as well. However you fit into this, your stories, reflections, and questions are valued.

We, Soundarya Kanthi and Darby Ford, are excited to engage with you over these next 10 weeks. Our friendship began in graduate school at Appalachian State University, where despite our extremely different backgrounds, we shared many passions. After graduation, we continued to share many conversations about the need for racial justice in both personal and professional settings. One day, we came to the conclusion that we needed to share these conversations with others.

We are quick to admit that we are not experts on this subject, but instead believe that the best teachers are learners themselves. We understand that as two non-Black individuals, we cannot fully understand what it means to be Black in America. Yet, as witnesses, we have a responsibility to listen, to research, and to use our platform to encourage other non-Black individuals to be anti-racist allies.

Just as we hope to share our research with you, we encourage you to share your feedback with us over these next 10 weeks. Please engage with us through using our comment section. We want to know your reactions, your questions, and your insights, as we continue to learn how to support racial justice.
